Science Fact !

Your nose and ears continue growing throughout your entire life !

What determines the colour of our skin?

The colour of a humans skin is determined by the level of pigment melanin that the body produces. Those with small amounts of melanin have light skin while those with large amounts have dark skin!

SMC Info on Science !

Science info ! :D

Do you know that you can heat a boiling tube directly using a bunsen burner? It will not crack as it is not a test-tube. :)

Till then.

Shake and Change!

The shake and change activity was one of the interesting experiment that the members had done.

The colour of the solution in the conical flask changes every time the conical flask is shaken!

From dark blue, the solution turns to light blue depending on how long and fast you shake the conical flask!

The Dancing Gummy Bear

The second experiment we did was named 'The Dancing Gummy Bear.'

You might think this experiment must be interesting. We are gonna make the gummy bear dance.

Well, you are so right!

This experiment requires you a gummy bear, potassium chlorate, a beaker, a bunsen burner, a boiling tube, a pair of test-tube holder, tripod stand and a wire gauze.

How did we make the gummy bear dance?

Well, when potassium chlorate reacts with a gummy bear which acts as glucose it will cause a reaction.
The reaction occured makes a vigorous flame. You guys may not see the gummy bear dance if you look
outside the beaker. But if u move just a lil closer and put ur head above the beaker, you might just see it
moving around the beaker. But becareful, because the flame produced is vigorous.

Here are some pictures when the experiment was held.

As you can see, the boiling tube wasn't heated directly. It is heated in a beaker with water.
This is to make sure the heating is even.

While waiting for the potassium chlorate to melt. After it has melt, pour the molten potassium chlorate
into a beaker. Then, throw a gummy bear into the beaker and this is what happens.

A vigorous flame is produced due to the reaction of melted potassium chlorate and a gummy bear which acts as a glucose.

Well, before i end this post, f.y.i. this is one of the method people in firework industries used to make fireworks.

Till then.

'A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.'
-Albert Einstein-

Diffusion

First experiment we did was simple.

The aim of the experiment was to determine what made the potassium manganate (VII) turn the water, purple.

You just need to add a few drops of potassium manganate (VII) into a beaker full of water.

What made the water turned purple?

The answer is diffusion occured.
Diffusion is the spread of particles through random motions from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration.

And this is how diffusion looks like when potassium manganate (VII) is added into a beaker of water.

Another important thing to remind you all.

POTASSIUM MANGANATE (VII) IS PURPLE COLOUR. :)

SMC BOD 2012

Sorry for not uploading. It's been a while.
Well, it's already 2012. The ex-bod has left us and now let me present you the new ones. :)

We may be a small group, but we are like a family conducting and discovering new things by carrying out experiments. And a certain reaction occurs every time a meeting is conduct. Laughter. :)

The next post will be about the activities, I mean EXPERIMENTS that we carried out.

adopts the hypotheses as they were demonstrated propositions.'
